Google Fit arrives on the Play Store

Remember Google Fit? Google officially announced Fit at its I/O developer conference in June, detailing the APIs that developers could use to track a user’s fitness. Fast forward four months and we can finally give Fit a try for ourselves.

Google Fit is a standalone app and fitness platform designed to compete with Apple’s Healthkit, in the Google Play store

Google Fit is now available for download in Google Play. The 13MB app is compatible with devices running Android 4.0 or higher. Google says that Fit is also compatible with Android Wear devices, the web and your tablet.

As far as features go, Google Fit can track your walking, running and cycling activity, track your goals and recommend new ones for you. The app can also be connected with third-party devices to pull your data into Google Fit.

Google Fit’s feature set seems kind of bare bones for now, but it does offer the basic activity tracking that you’d expect from a fitness app. With all of the focus on health and fitness in mobile lately, I’m sure that Google will be updating and improving Fit frequently. And hey, until then, at least the app looks nice.

You can also connect your favorite fitness devices and apps like Strava, Withings, Runtastic, Runkeeper and Noom Coach to Google Fit and we’ll surface all of the relevant data in one spot," Google said in a blog post , giving you a clear and complete view of your fitness.

The newer iPhones, high-end Galaxy phones and devices like the Google Nexus 5 come with relevant sensors that are aimed at tracking the physical activity of users. On Galaxy devices and the Nexus 5, the Google Fit may work accurately. But for the other devices, it may rely on GPS or accelerometer and they may not be enough to provide it with accurate information while a user is walking or climbing stairs.

More about the app:

  • Just carry your phone and get access to your walking, running, and cycling activity.
  • Set goals based on either duration or steps and see your progress throughout the day.
  • Receive performance-based recommendations for activity goals.
  • Connect third party devices and apps to Fit and we’ll show you all of your fitness data in one place.
  • Compatible with all Android Wear devices.
  • Also access Google Fit on the web at http://www.google.com/fit and on your tablet or on ur computer.
