Sundar Pichai- Chief of almost everything at Google

Sundar Pichai - Chief of almost everything at Google

Google CEO Larry Page has reorganised Google management, in which top Google executive was handed over with many of the leadership responsibilities. The well-liked Sundar Pichai now is the boss of research, search, maps, Google+, commerce and ad products and infrastructure and will continue to keep his existing responsibility for Android, Chrome and Google Apps. Basically, now he is now the chief of everything. The six executives in charge of these product areas, all of whom previously reported directly to Page, will now report to Pichai.

It also appears that there is more to the promotion than just the good guy getting his due. He led successful efforts for difficult projects that were core to Google's continued financial success, namely Toolbar and Chrome. Toolbar wasn't an obviously sexy product but it helped defend the presence of Google search on users' computers during a critical period following the revelation of Google's incredible profitability. Chrome extended that mission to improve the user experience of the entire web: keep users on the web and you'll keep them searching on Google.

The consolidation of divisions under one leader will help the company unify its business across the board rather than have Android, Chrome, and the rest operate as individual entities. That increases the reach of core Google services like search, and its app marketplace, things that bring the parent company direct and indirect revenue.

He recruited, mentored, and retained a great team. Sundar's team of product managers had a reputation as being among the best of the best, similar to the reputation of the software engineers within Search Quality. He avoided making enemies. Google has politics like any other large company, and Sundar navigated those politics to make his team successful while inflicting the least possible damage on any other team.
