Google CEO Sudar Pichai Makes Executive Schuffle assigns Hiroshi Lockheimer as SVP for Android,Chrome Os and Chromecast

Sundar Pichai has made his first big personnel moves since taking over the helm as new CEO of Google, promoting three vice-presidents to higher roles in the company. Hiroshi Lockheimer is moving up from VP of Android to senior VP of Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast. Pichai knows that role well, as he previously led Android and Chrome OS before moving to head of products and then CEO.

Neal Mohan, vice president of display and video advertising, now assumes that role as SVP. And Hiroshi Lockheimer, currently a VP on the Android team, is now SVP for Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast.

Who is Hiroshi Lockheimer:

Lockheimer has been at Google since 2006. He’s known as a congenial, skilled engineer and, more importantly, a trusted confidant for Pichai, who ran Android and Chrome before his appointment to lead all Google products in October 2014.

Since that reorg, Lockheimer has taken over more business responsibilities for Android, which is dealing with shrinking profits for its handset partners as well as the expansion onto new platforms like cars and wearables. Dave Burke, another Android VP, who showed off the company’s latest Nexus phones last week, has taken on more engineering leadership duties.

Moving forward, we are all but guaranteed to be hearing a lot from Hiroshi, a person most of you probably don’t know much about just yet. He is no small timer at Google, though. Lockheimer has been int he company since 2006, and has been acting as VP of Android until this promotion. Lockheimer is a key player in dealing with falling profits and expanding onto new platforms (automotive, wearables, IoT, etc.).

Some new faces are about to start showing up at announcements, guys! It’s pretty exciting, but more exciting is thinking about the changes this new leadership can bring. We are sure Sundar made smart choices here, so we are excited to see what comes out of this, as well as Alphabet.

Sundar Pichai also Appoints Neal Mohan and Phillip Schindler:

Mohan is another titan inside Google. He joined the search giant after it acquired his company DoubleClick and runs Google’s formidable display ads business. Over the years, he has become increasingly involved with its video and its YouTube business as well, and is a well-known, powerful player in the advertising industry.

Mohan’s also an in-demand exec in Silicon Valley. Twitter tried to poach him around four years ago, only to see Mohan lured back to Google with reportedly sizable packages. In June, Re/code reported that Mohan was considering departing for the lead product at Dropbox. A week later, we reported that was not the case — Mohan did not take the offer. At the time, a source familiar with the company said the decision did not involve any additional compensation.

Phillip Schindler is an seasoned ads VP who was one of the three executives replacing Google’s lionized chief business officer Omid Kordestani, is now the SVP of Global Sales and Operations. Omid Kordestani along with marketing chief Lorraine Twohill and partnerships chief Daniel Alegre will be moving to an advisory role as part of the Alphabet restructuring.

Sundar Pichai gave a few Googlers promotions to VP titles. Lean, bearded, Chennai-born Pichai faces challenges from an unlikely rival - Microsoft, which recently announced its new operating system Windows 10.

The move ushers direct competition with Google’s Android platform which runs on mobiles devices such as smartphones, phablets, and tablets. Under Sundar Pichai’s leadership, google recently rolled out management solutions such as MDM that will help companies build an application environment for mobile devices as well as desktop, in a bid to gain traction over reduced number of Android users.

The news of the promotions was sent out by Sundar Pichai in a company-wide email.
