There's only about one month to wait before the Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL are released
and as is tradition with highend Lumia devices, the expectation is that the camera will be killer.
Microsoft published a pretty indepth (and poetically worded) blog post talking about what it calls
the camera "magic" built into the new Lumia flagships.
The post starts out with the basic specs of the cameras a rear facing Pure View camera with a
20MP advanced BSI sensor, f/1.9 Zeiss optics, tripleLED natural flash, fifth generation
optical image stabilization (OIS), ISO12800, 4K video, and a 5MP wideangle front facing
camera and a blurb about the natural colors and fine detail captured by the sensors. Alakarhu Director, cameras for phones at Microsoft doesn't try to hold back, saying that the dynamic range is so good that "HDR is rarely needed"
and ends the segment with the bold claim, "it's SLR quality. Now let's take look at the images...
Natural Colors
In the image below red color is deeply saturated but the skin looks perfectly natural, colors look vivid but realistic. In adition the image has a fine texture, the shadow areas are also exposed in superior quality. The image has been shot with full automatic settings.Incredible Detail
The Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL cameras can also capture great detail with incredible accuracy, allowing for some stunning shots. The contrast is great, the colors look natural and the focus might just be the cherry on top.Low Light Images
Continuing the trend of previous highend Lumias, the camera in the Lumia 950/950 XL also excels in lowlight, in this case because of “its super high sensitivity sensor, 5th generation OIS, and large aperture.” Here, you can see an image from a competitor’s phone (read: iPhone) on the left and the Lumia 950 XL on the right:Artisctic TripleLED Flash
Finally, the flash. “The natural three LED (red, green, blue) flash automatically matches the colors of the ambient light,” Alakarhu explains. “This means that if you’re taking a photo outside at twilight, the flash will produce a blue light to complement the bluish color of the scene, and if you’re taking a photo of a candlelit dinner, the flash will adjust to expose candlelight. Due to the natural colors, it also works very well in daytime as a fillin flash.”In addition, in Rich Capture mode it is possible for you to change the amount of light in a photo after the image is taken. The camera takes two photos, one with flash and one without, and we use very clever algorithms to get the best of both. This is called Dynamic Flash.
The Nokia's Legacy of exceptional camera's lives on.
