Microsoft outplays Google: Bing Android Update serves better than the Android's "Now on Tap" feature

Recently,Google had announced its revolutionary plan of implementing the "Now on Tap" feature on Android. This feature would help us in getting necessary and relevant information within any app which we have opened. It is a heavenly feature to all the Android users which reduces the burden of tedious app switching whenever required. But they never expected that Microsoft would come in a swoosh and steal their limelight with the new Bing android update.

Microsoft has beaten Google on two different fronts. The first one is a Bing for Android update which includes a feature called "Snapshots".In applications, they are very similar, rather better than the "Now on tap" of Android promised in May.

With the new Bing on your device, with a swipe up or a long press on the Home button gives results from Bing related to the details on the page viewed. The results are diversely ranged. The results are displayed on a popup kind of thing which comes up when signalled by the home button.

All we need to do is to install or update(if already installed) the Bing for Android and enable all the permissions. Then you can enjoy the feature. The results may not be so accurate and in some cases like in kindle app, blank spaces are shown. But, this is definitely an added value as it is simpler and more effective than switching apps and typing for what we need. Its amazing!!

The bing accomplishes everything by tapping into its knowledge and action graphs, a collection of over a billion entities, over 21 billion facts about those entities and over 5 billion relationships between them. You may be more familiar with it than you think, its what powers the search for Apple's Siri etc. Bing for android may not offer enough utility to make you drop Chrome from your app tray, but it need not have to in order to serve its purpose.

“The Bing Android app, we really did it to showcase this experience of the knowledge and action graph showing up in the context of what you’re working on,”,this was what Bing general manager Ryan Gavin had to say. “It’s not the endgame.”

About the overlay experiences, Gavin said that it was kind of a first base.“They’re good and they’re fine, but where it gets really powerful is when that experience can show up in the context of the app I’m in, where I don’t even have to think about holding down the home button, or some additional overlay to bring on top.”, he said.

“A messaging app could add a Bing snapshot with actionable info on a restaurant, making it easier for a group to plan an evening.A social media app could augment users’ photos with information about the locations of each photo. A news app could show definitions and descriptions of terms that users want to drill into. A music app could augment content with snapshots of artists and songs.”, wrote Gurpreet Pall, a Bing executive , indicating various applications which Bing could lead to.

Apart from these, it offers other features also like setting the daily image as wallpaper and many other Bing services.

The result of this is very much similar to the "Now on Tap".But Bing's approach has won hearts as it worked on the previous versions of Android also where as Google would limit its feature to the latest versions, and to the nexus devices only for a couple of time.

This might be a good news for the Android users. There are many reasons as well as advantages of the coexistence of these two apps. The application efficiency of these both apps is different in different contexts.Either way, your device gets smarter and efficient with both these amazing apps on it.
