Sony releases Android M developers preview for a Dozen Xperia devices

Android M developers preview for sony

Sony kicked off the week by announcing a developer preview version of Android M for its Xperia devices. Devices in Sony’s Open Device program can now run a preview build of Android M, which was released on Nexus devices several weeks ago. With this move Sony beats Samsung, HTC and other players to the punch. Even Motorola, which is typically quick to release Android M updates, hasn't made any noise on this front.

There are one dozen phones and tablets able to take advantage of the Android M build:

  • Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Xperia Z1 Compact
  • Xperia Z1
  • Xperia Z Ultra
  • Xperia E3
  • Xperia M2
  • Xperia T2 Ultra

Last week sony announced Android 5.1 update for its Xperia line up which took a lot of time and Now SONY proved that even sony is in the track by releasing Android M developers preview for a dozen of its phone

The big news here is that it has provided the binaries for Android M, which are basically the driver packages that make the phone’s essential hardware work with the software. However, Sony hasn’t yet implemented support for the camera or cellular modem on Android M, so this certainly won’t be your daily driver.

Flashing Android M does not look to be overly complicated. All you will need to download is the file itself, binaries, and then verify your apps upon completion. Do note, Sony stresses that these builds are not meant for daily usage. You will need an unlocked bootloader, and in addition, the modem and the camera have not been implemented.
